DMMMSU students prevail in ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition 2021

DMMMSU students bagged 5th and 8th place in the ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition (AIYC) Quiz Bee 2021 hosted by the Prince of Songkla University (Thailand)— together with Universiti Utara (Malaysia) and Universitas Airlangga (Indonesia) via Zoom on November 20, 2021.

Joselle Jea P. Armas and Rejay M. Abel secured the 2nd spot during the preliminary round and placed 5th in the final round. On the other hand, Gianell Laroco and Cathrina G. Laroya won 7th place in the preliminaries and 8th place in the finals.

All four contestants are BA Political Science students of the College of Arts and Sciences in the Mid La Union Campus.

Ten teams from DMMMSU qualified for the ASEAN Quiz preliminary rounds. 120 undergraduate contestants are from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and China. DMMMSU is the lone university representative from the Philippines.

The ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition, formerly the PSU ASEAN Youth Forum, was organized for the first time in September 2019. The Forum was an initiative of PSU’s President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Kaewpradub, and is intended to enhance the competitiveness of the young people who are likely to guide ASEAN’s future. The enterprise has benefited from much input by the Consul General of Malaysia in Songkhla, HE Mr. Mohammad Afundi Abu Baka, and immense support from HE Mr. Fachry Sulaiman, Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Songkhla. Past activities included a speech contest, ASEAN quiz, and project development.

ASEAN economic collaboration under the AEC blueprint 2025 works to form a highly competitive, innovative, and dynamic integration with the global economy, even though the COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected that economy. The ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition 2021, “ Advancing Partnership fro the Sustainable Development of the ASEAN Economy“ is a platform for students to act as ASEAN citizens and suggest sustainable economic ideas related to the challenges of COVID-19.
