The Environmental Management Unit of the University started the implementation of its solid waste management initiative, ‘Recycler’s Fair: Palit Basura Project’, at the North La Union Campus on August 31, 2021. They recovered a total of 1,151.50 kilograms of recyclable materials from various offices and facilities within the campus. Approximately, they were able to save 12 cu.m. of space if these materials were disposed of in a landfill facility.
Materials collected are as follows:
- Paper – 858 kgs.
- Carton – 60.5 kgs.
- Mix plastics – 22.5 kgs.
- Metals – 17.5 kgs.
- PETE bottles (clear) – 32.5 kgs.
- Green PETE bottles – 2.5 kgs.
- Mix PETE bottles – 92 kgs.
- PVC – 1 kg.
- Assorted glass bottles – 56 kgs.
- Clear cellophane – 1 kg.
- Polystyrene – 8 kgs.
As for Prof. Celso Jucutan who initiated the activity, he expressed his deep appreciation of the support of project partners – the Institute of Environmental Studies (IES), the Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG), and Dragon8 Junkshop owned by Mayolegaspi Belen.
This initiative which promotes Republic Act 9003 will also be conducted in other campuses of the University to encourage stakeholders to practice proper waste segregation to enhance waste recovery. (CJ)
