DMMMSU-PCAARRD-Sci-CAT Project Conducts POT Training on Garlic Production at Rocapor’s Farm Learning Site and School for Practical Agriculture

The University Sci-CAT Project Team ends the year 2020 with POT (Package of Technology) Training on Garlic Production to its farm partner/beneficiary- Rocapor’s Farm Learning Site and School for Practical Agriculture at Brgy. Tabtabungao, Rosario, La Union on December 23. 2020. Forty farmers from the Farm as well from Brgy. Tabtabungao and nearby barangays attended in the training.

          The training aimed at introducing farming technology that could advance the farmers’ knowledge and skills and serve as a supplemental income stream of the farm.

          During his Opening Remarks, Mr. Rolando M. Rocapor expressed his gratitude to the training facilitators and appreciation for the farmers for attending the said training. Afterwards, Prof. Lilito D. Gavina, Sci-CAT Project Leader, shared an overview of the training and introduced the training resource person.

 The training’s highlight was the lecture presentation cum practicum by the University Extension Director, Dr. Eladio E. Camalig. Before the lecture, a pre-test activity was conducted to gauge the farmers’ existing knowledge. Topics covered for the lecture are the following:

  • Status of Garlic Industry in the Philippines,
  • Garlic Plant and Garlic Varieties,
  • Land Preparation and Planting,
  • Irrigation and Fertilization,
  • Pest Management, and
  • Harvesting and Post-harvest Management.

Hands-on activities were also conducted as application of the concepts discussed in the lecture.

To cap off the training, an evaluation activity was facilitated by Ms. Karen D. Tabalanza, NLUC Extension Office Staff. Further, some participants also shared their impressions to the group. Then, awarding of certificates to the training participants and resource person followed. Finally, Dr. Florendo Q. Damasco Jr., Sci-CAT Project Staff, gave the closing remarks. Ms. Evalyn C. Manuel, Sci-CAT Project Assistant, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the program.

The training is part of the on-going Sci-CAT (Science for the Convergence of Agriculture and Tourism) project of DMMMSU and DOST- PCAARRD in collaboration with the UP-ISSI.
