The DMMMSU Open University System (DOUS) successfully conducted its first-ever two-day in-house Leadership Training at the DMMMSU Fisheries Research and Training Institute in Paraoir, Balaoan, La Union, on March 6-7, 2025. Organized by the CSBO and SAS Office, the event aimed to cultivate leadership skills, foster teamwork, and promote personal growth among student leaders.
Hosted by Jerome Fraga, a fourth-year BSBA student, the program started with an overview of house rules and objectives delivered by Dr. Meljo Z. Apilado, Head of SAS, followed by an inspiring welcome message from Dr. Bernardo Lamadrid, Executive Director of DOUS. To encourage camaraderie and collaboration, participants were grouped into four tribes: Adarna, Lam-ang, Makiling, and Mayari.
The training included a variety of engaging activities that encouraged unity, mindfulness, creativity, and responsibility. Participants took part in Zumba sessions and group dynamic activities that tested their teamwork and problem-solving skills. The program was further enriched by leadership lectures from distinguished speakers, including Hon. Ralph De Guzman, SK Chairperson of San Gabriel, La Union, who discussed Ethical Leadership; Prof. Billy D. Fabro, Faculty of NLUC, who spoke about Transformational Leadership; and Dr. Jerome D. Acupan, Head of LYDO in the City of San Fernando, La Union, who tackled Strategic Thinking. The evening program included a pageant competition, a candle-lighting ceremony, and a bonfire ritual, symbolizing teamwork, reconciliation, and a renewed commitment to leadership.
After the two-day event, Tribu Mayari was crowned as the Best Tribe, followed by Tribu Lam-ang, Tribu Adarna, and Tribu Makiling.
With the theme “Lead with a Purpose: Cultivating Influence and Growth,” the DOUS Leadership Training left a lasting impact, equipping student leaders with the confidence and capability to lead their communities effectively. (By Claudia Denise P. Barbadillo)
