Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) recently participated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the One in Accelerating Salt Innovations (OneASIN) Project at SOLA Hotel, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.  The OneASIN is a collaborative initiative led by the Department of Science and Technology Region 1 (DOST R1) in partnership with DMMMSU, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 1 (BFAR-1), DOST – Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), Department of Trade and Industry Region 1 (DTI R1) and Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).

Key officials present during the signing included Dr. Teresita A. Taboag (DOST R1 Regional Director), Rosario Segundina P. Gaerlan (BFAR R1 Director), Hon. Matthew Marcos-Manotoc (Provincial Governor of Ilocos Norte), Dr. Dexter R. Buted (PCA Administrator),  Atty. Raymond G. Panhon (DTI R1Regional Director), Dr. Junifer Rey E. Tabafunda (Chancellor of DMMMSU-North La Union Campus), and Dr. Prima Fe R. Franco (OIC of the Office of the President of MMSU).

During the event, experts presented modern salt production techniques. Dr. Andie John Tadeo from DMMMSU discussed the production of sea salt using high-density polyethylene-lined ponds and advanced filtration systems, offering a modern approach to enhance efficiency and output. Engr. Brian Rasco from DOST R1 outlined the collaborative efforts and programs instituted to enhance the salt-making industry in Ilocos Norte. Furthermore, Ms. Lena Rosario and Mr. Hero Galamgam from the DOST R1 Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) emphasized the significance of their services, focusing on food safety standards and the adherence to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) to ensure that the produced salt meets high-quality benchmarks and is safe for consumer utilization.

The MOU represents a significant step in advancing the salt industry of Ilocos Norte, aimed at supporting local salt producers by improving production methods, enhancing quality, and increasing competitiveness.
