Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) conducted a three-day Computer Science (CS) fundamentals localized boot camp for potential trainers, learning facilitators, and implementers from November 4 to 6, 2024, at the CE Basic Education Function Hall, DMMMSU Mid La Union Campus (MLUC), City of San Fernando, La Union.

The boot camp intended to provide the 45 learning facilitators with a strong foundation in Computer Science knowledge and skills to enable them to effectively integrate computational thinking and coding into their educational practices.

Utilizing the Inquire-Immerse-Innovate framework, the training showcased the facilitators’ expertise in various topics.

The learning service providers include Jan Kenneth Laguardia, SLUC – Laboratory High School (LHS) Principal, Joana Reyes, Faculty Member of NLUC – LHS, and Ace Ceremonia, MLUC – LHS Principal.

On the first day, Mr. Laguardia discussed coding, which is understanding the basic building blocks of coding (variables, data types, operators, control flow) through an interactive lecture with real-world examples. Ms. Reyes discussed the introduction to programming language, and Mr. Ceremonia led the participants to an interactive coding session.

On the second day, Mr. Ceremonia introduced more complex programming concepts. Mr. Laguardia introduced debugging, and Ms. Reyes discussed project planning and design.

The third day was devoted to project showcase and presentations by the participants which was facilitated by Ms. Reyes. Meanwhile, Mr. Ceremonia discussed strategies for integrating coding concepts effectively into the existing curriculum, and Mr. Laguardia discussed techniques for assessing student learning in coding activities.

This initiative was facilitated by learning service providers themselves. (By Aniway P. Millares)
