The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), represented by Mr. Kevin Bricia, Assistant Program Manager of KOICA Philippines, visited Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University South La Union Campus (DMMMSU-SLUC) for a site inspection at the College of Agriculture (CA) on October 11, 2024.
This visit was conducted in preparation for the deployment of a KOICA volunteer in the first quarter of 2025, who will spend one year at the College of Agriculture to implement a project focused on Sustainable Mushroom Farming for Rural Development and Food Security.
The project supports DMMMSU’s goal of enhancing rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable agriculture in Rosario, La Union. The volunteer will collaborate with the university to improve mushroom farming techniques, provide training to local farmers, and facilitate access to resources and markets. This initiative aims to empower communities with sustainable practices, contributing to food security and economic resilience in the region.
During the site inspection, Mr. Bricia met with key campus officials, including Dr. Raquel D. Quaimbao, DMMMSU-SLUC OIC Chancellor; Prof. Ferdinand Navarro, CA Dean; Dr. Jesus Rafael B. Jarata, University Director for International Affairs; and Dr. Faulsyn Gay U. Amongan, Campus Head for Instruction. The meeting focused on the operational details of the project and how the KOICA Volunteer will integrate with the university’s existing programs.
The KOICA volunteer’s role will be pivotal in transferring technical knowledge, enhancing farm productivity, and assisting small-scale farmers in adapting to more efficient farming systems.
The KOICA WFK Program has deployed over 700 Korean Overseas Volunteers (KOVs) to various local partner institutions across the country, including academic institutions, government agencies, and NGOs, since its inception in 1990. The volunteers have worked in a wide range of fields, such as education, agriculture, healthcare, and community development. (By Jesus Rafael B. Jarata)
