DMMMSU Environmental Sustainability and Development Unit, in collaboration with Klima Center of Manila Observatory, Young Earthsavers’ Society (YES), Institute of Environmental Studies (IES), the Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG), and Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan, Inc. (LINK), organized the Climate and Energy Convening at the International Convention Center – Hall A, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union last August 30, 2024.

The event, themed “RENDER: Moving Past Fossil Fuels, Envisioning La Union’s Future,” aimed to empower young people to advocate for a just and resilient energy future. RENDER provides climate and energy specialists a platform to collaborate and promote science-informed policies.  

During the event, Mr. Tonichi Regalado, RENDER Multidisciplinary Director and Assistant Director for Climate Research and Management of Klima Center discussed the principles of mitigation and adaptation as well as loss and damage, emphasizing the importance of science-based information in planning strategies for climate action.

Mr. Crisanto D. Palabay, Convenor of Isalbar ti Pintas ti La Union, and  Ms. Mickey Galang, Co-Founder of Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan, Inc. (LINK) shared their journey in opposing the proposed coal-fired power plant in Luna, La Union and advocating for renewable energy sources. They both stressed their commitment to empowering the youth as stewards of God’s creation. They acknowledged the support of experts, religious organizations, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the youth in standing for everyone’s right to have a just and sustainable future.

Furthermore, Mr. Celso H Jucutan, Director for Environmental Concerns, Sustainability, and Development, shared the various mangrove restoration and rehabilitation efforts being implemented by DMMMSU in partnership with local governments, civil society organizations, corporate groups, and community associations. Mr. Jucutan also discussed the initiatives under the Environmental Justice Sector Reform Program Phase 2 (EJSRP 2) implemented by DMMMSU Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG) and Tanggol Kalikasan Inc.
