DMMMSU salt experts conducted training for the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 5 Development of Salt Industry Project (DSIP) implementers and technical personnel at BFAR Regional Office 5, Fabrica, Bula, Camarines Sur on August 20 to 22, 2024.

Dr. Andie John D. Tadeo, Director of Fisheries Research and Training Institute (FRTI), provided an overview of the salt industry in the Philippines and dealt with the laws that govern salt production specifically the Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide (ASIN) Law (RA 8172) and Salt Development Industry Act (RA 11985). He further discussed the industry-based production of salt in ponds. Dr. Minerva Tabafunda, Head of Research in NLUC, presented the research and development projects of DMMMSU. Dr. Junifer Rey E. Tabafunda, NLUC Chancellor, presented insights on community-based production and characterization of salt. Ms. Donna P. Perol discussed the refinement of salt. Professor Keneth G. Bayani, Director for Research, provided strategies for Simple Farm Record Keeping.

Aside from the lectures, DMMMSU personnel also trained the participants in site selection and preparation for harvesting and marketing of salt. (by Gloeduard G. Milanes)
