DMMMSU Open University System (DOUS) held an in-depth “Training of Trainers (TOT) for Prospective Applicants and Accredited Cooperative Training Providers (ACTPROs)” from July 30 to August 2, 2024, at the San Juan Resort Development and Management Corporation in San Juan, La Union. This program aimed to elevate the skills and knowledge of trainers associated with applicant cooperatives and ACTPROs.

This initiative, led by the DOUS Executive Director, Dr. Bernardo D. Lamadrid and Continuing Professional education (CPED) Training Chief, Dr. Romeo C. Opeña Jr., equipped participants with essential skills in cooperative development, focusing on providing effective training to cooperatives and understanding best practices in cooperative business management.

The rationale behind this training is rooted in the belief that cooperatives serve as vital mechanisms for citizens to organize around shared interests and address common social and economic needs. As a higher education institution committed to public service, DMMMSU seeks to advance the cause of cooperativism and community organization within its locality.

This training also ensured compliance with the Cooperative Development Authority’s (CDA) Memorandum Circular No. 2022-11, which outlines the new guidelines on the accreditation and monitoring of cooperative training providers. As part of DOUS’s continuing education program, this initiative contributes to the broader goal of cooperative development and community empowerment in the Philippines.

More than just an educational seminar, the TOT provided a platform for participants to learn efficient methods of conducting cooperative training and to gain insights into the best practices of member-led cooperative management. Through this training, DOUS continues to support and strengthen the cooperative movement, reflecting its ongoing commitment to fostering community development and empowerment.
