DMMMSU and its partner institutions launched the First International Research and Innovation Conference on Education, Engineering, and Agriculture at the International Convention Center, Bacnotan, La Union. Anchored in the theme Strengthening Research and Innovation Ecosystem through Education, Engineering, and Agriculture Interface, the conference, which is held through face-to-face and online modalities, runs from December 4 to 6, 2023.
The event drew scholars and research enthusiasts in the three fields. They come from 42 Higher Education Institutions throughout the Philippines and other countries.
President Jaime I. Manuel, Jr., in his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of the conference. He stated, “This conference is not just an assembly of experts; it is a celebration of the diverse realms of education, engineering, and agriculture. As we delve into the intersection of these three crucial fields, we aim to explore advancements, forge connections, break down disciplinary borders, and weave a tapestry of collaboration that transcends geographical boundaries.”
Hon. Divina Fontanilla, Mayor of the host Local Government Unit of Bacnotan, La Union, expounded on the three fields – education, engineering, and agriculture. She stressed that the Municipality of Bacnotan was declared the Philippines’ Champion in the National Literacy Awards 2022.
She further highlighted the essence of literacy: “Literacy is one of our advocacies in this Municipality, and hosting this international conference complements our goal of producing educated and empowered citizens. Literacy transcends the sectors of agriculture and engineering as well.”
Meanwhile, Hon. Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David, Governor of La Union, who is at the forefront of education and environmental protection through her Executive Assistant, Mr. Eleazar Belgica, also graced the conference.
Along with key personalities in the Province of La Union, the members of the Board of Regents also expressed their support by attending the Opening Program.
In his keynote address, Dr. Eric Van Bochove, Member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation Massawippi Foundation (FMF) and advisor of Catalyste+ Canada, centered his address on the importance of Innovating in Agriculture to Improve Food Security.
Another milestone achieved during the conference was the launching of SINAG: ASEAN+ Network for Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation, and Futures Thinking, a global organization that enables its members to advance ideas and projects that complement the UN Framework for Sustainable University.
Further, DMMMSU forged collaborations with its partner institutions through a MOA signing. Following the MOA signing, a ribbon-cutting to launch the exhibits was held.
The exchange of ideas and the commitment demonstrated by University leaders and scholars in the three fields underscored the collective resolve to embrace sustainable practices for the benefit of present and future generations.
This groundbreaking research conference not only unveiled cutting-edge innovations but also served as a catalyst for increased collaboration. (By Ayu)
