In a proactive move towards enhancing food security research, select researchers from DMMMSU are completing a rigorous training program at Kasetsart University in Thailand from November 6 to 30, 2023.

DMMMSU lecturers and researchers Prof. Anabelle G. Valdez, Ms. Mary Ann Ysabel Y. Orpilla, and Ms. Rossana P. Abat are in a training program focused on advanced methodologies and technologies in the field of food security aimed to equip DMMMSU personnel with the latest tools and techniques necessary to address contemporary challenges in agricultural production and food sustainability. The immersive experience provides insights into cutting-edge research methodologies and technologies employed at Kasetsart University, a renowned agricultural sciences and food security institution.

“The training at Kasetsart University has been an enriching experience for our team. We gain exposure to state-of-the-art practices in food security research, and the knowledge we acquire will significantly contribute to our ongoing and future projects at DMMMSU,” remarked Prof. Valdez, expressing the team’s enthusiasm for the newfound expertise.

Their educational exchange in Thailand is funded by CHED-LAKAS (Leading the Advancement of Knowledge in Agriculture and Sciences) program, which focuses on research and development efforts in four strategic technology areas: 1) Agriculture, Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries, 2) Health and Nutrition, 3) Science of Engineering, and 4) National Quality Infrastructure. These are geared to accelerate Philippine higher education institutions’ growth into top-tier institutions to boost innovation, economic development, and the country’s ability to compete internationally.

Along with MMSU and ISPSC in the Ilocos Region and the BauerTek Corporation, a pharmaceutical company based in Bulacan, this CHED LAKAS consortium seeks to maximize the development of probiotics from indigenous food plants through academic-industry collaboration.

Upon their return, the researchers are expected to integrate the acquired knowledge into their ongoing projects and contribute to the university’s efforts to ensure sustainable food production and address regional food security challenges.

The lecturers’ attendance at the training program exemplifies DMMMSU’s dedication to continuous learning, international collaboration, and the pursuit of knowledge to address pressing issues that impact communities locally and globally. The experience gained at Kasetsart University is anticipated to have a lasting impact on the research landscape at DMMMSU, reinforcing its position as a hub for agricultural innovation and food security initiatives in the Philippines.
