San Fernando City, October 17, 2023 — Anie Sophia Garlejo, a 4th-year BSE English major student, has once again displayed her unmatched oratory skills by winning the National Statistics Month Oratorical Contest in the regional level. The event took place at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-La Union Branch.
Representing the province of La Union, Garlejo delivered a speech revolving around the theme, “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for a Healthier Philippines.”
In her compelling speech, Garlejo underscored that the journey to a healthier Philippines begins with a commitment to data-driven healthcare. It starts with the intelligent use of data and statistics. “By harnessing the power of numbers, we can make informed decisions, target interventions effectively, allocate resources efficiently, and empower individuals to take control of their health,” she said.
With her winning in the oratorical contest this year, Garlejo now records a back to back championship in the said contest. Her earlier victory came in 2022 when she triumphed in both the provincial and regional levels of the NSM Oratorical Contest.
Reflecting on her journey through the NSM oratorical contests over the years, Garlejo shared, “I’ve been participating in the NSM oratorical contests since my freshman year of high school, but the top spot always seemed elusive. Winning for the first time, although it was in an online format, brought some happiness, but it wasn’t quite the same as an in-person performance. Clinching victory for the second time, following the pandemic, during a live performance, brought even greater joy as I finally reached the pinnacle. However, winning for the third time has been the most fulfilling experience. Every year, the competition becomes more challenging, and maintaining my top position indicates personal growth, making it my happiest win yet.”
She further shared, “I used to hold certain superstitious beliefs, like the number 3 being my lucky charm. I believed that picking a different number meant a 50% decrease in my chances of winning. However, over time, I’ve come to realize that it’s not mere luck that determines my success, but rather the dedication and hard work I invest. Most importantly, I’ve learned that there is always a room for improvement. No matter how experienced we become, we can always learn from others. This year, I’ve gained so much from my coach, Ma’am Abelynn Llarenas, whose nurturing guidance has been invaluable.”
In 2021, this dedicated teaching intern also secured the top position in the NSM’s Spoken Word Poetry contest, solidifying her status as a three-peat champion.
Alongside other representatives from Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte, Garlejo was awarded a cash prize and a certificate of recognition from the organizers of the event. (By ATL)
