Tangog and Chrisna Carpio, senior education students, won an online global debate on May 13, 2023. Universities from several nations participated in the event, which was run by Van Lang University in Vietnam.

Tangog and Carpio sent a three-minute film outlining the most significant SGD in the Philippines for the competition’s first round, which took place in March. On April 15, the second round was held. Three days before this round, the topics were revealed. On the other hand, the last round’s subjects were announced 30 minutes prior.

After the rounds of intense debate, the team comprising BSE Social Science Major students from the College of Education of the South La Union Campus emerged victorious. Their well-crafted arguments and compelling delivery impressed the judges, who praised their analytical skills, coherence, and ability to think on their feet, all while adhering to the British parliamentary format.

The British parliamentary style of debating challenged the participants to delve deep into the nuances of each topic and present a persuasive case in a specific manner, with each team consisting of two speakers and taking on the roles of either government or opposition. The winning team’s victory is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and intellectual prowess, as they skillfully navigated each round of the competition with confidence and poise, all while following the traditional rules and customs of the British parliamentary format.

In a statement following their win, the team expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event and credited their success to their collective effort and teamwork. They also expressed their hope that their achievement would inspire other students to hone their debating skills and engage in rigorous intellectual discourse using the British parliamentary style.

The international debate showcased the power of technology in enabling global collaboration and fostering meaningful discussions across borders. The organizers lauded the participants for their adaptability and resilience in adapting to the virtual format and for their commitment to advancing knowledge and understanding through constructive dialogue in the British parliamentary style.
