The Joint Technical Working Group (TWG), comprising the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region I and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), assessed and validated the regional historical trail spanning Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte from November 19-22, 2024.

The TWG reviewed historical records, conducted field surveys, and engaged local communities to ensure the trail accurately reflects the region’s historical legacy. Highlights include Pangasinan’s Lingayen Gulf, the Philippine-American World War II marker and Darigayos Cove in La Union, and the Bessang Pass Natural Monument in Ilocos Sur. The trail also features Ilocos Norte, a province notable for its wartime role and rich colonial heritage, including numerous Spanish-inspired churches and watchtowers.

Protected Area Superintendent (PASU) Bonie A. Ancheta emphasized sustainable management of Bessang Pass, guided by the ENIPAS Act. He also highlighted the importance of engaging communities to protect its ecological, cultural, and historical significance.

This collaborative effort between DOT Region I and DMMMSU aims to preserve and promote the historical trails, fostering education and cultural tourism while enriching understanding of the region’s pivotal historical contributions. (By Marissa R. Fangon)
