Researchers from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), frontiers of salt production, garnered major awards at the 2nd Philippine Salt Congress held at Pangasinan State University Golden Lion Hotel on December 12-13, 2024.

Dr. Andie John D. Tadeo, Director of DMMMSU’s Fisheries Research and Training Institute (FRTI), was recognized as the Best Presenter.   He presented his paper, which he co-authored with Dr. Junifer Rey E. Tabafunda, Prof. Keneth G. Bayani, Prof. Donna P. Perol, Prof. Charlie C. De Vera, and Prof. Aphril Easter Sunday Jaime I. Jayme. Their study titled Production of Sea Salt in Ponds Lined with High-density Polyethylene Platform and Different Filtration System was funded by Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) under the Accelerated R&D Program for Capacity Building of Research and Development Institutions and Industrial Competitiveness: Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE) Program amounting to PHP 4,189,899.

The Congress, organized by Pangasinan State University in partnership with DOST and DA-BFAR, aimed to showcase the latest research on salt-making practices, disseminate innovations and technologies to elevate salt production, recognize and reward significant contributions to the industry, ignite a culture of innovation and collaboration, and establish strong linkages and gather support for the Philippine Salt Industry Roadmap.

On the second day of the Congress DMMMSU also participated as an exhibitor during the 2-day event showcasing the technology generated and salt products produced in the HDPE platform and cooking facility developed by DOST.

DMMMSU’s participation in the congress highlights DMMMSU’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the salt industry and promoting sustainable practices. (By Ayu)
