DMMMSU Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG), in celebration of their 5th Foundation Anniversary, planted 300 mangroves along Baroro River, Brgy. Baroro, Bacnotan, La Union on November 22, 2024.
The seedlings were sponsored by Fostering Education & Environment for Development, Inc. and UPS through the ECOSURF Program.
Along with IEG, volunteers from the Asosasyon ti Mangngalap ken Mannalon ti Baroro, Local Government Unit of Bacnotan, participated in the activity. These augment the other 200 mangroves which were planted by the employees of UPS on November 10, 2024.
Mangroves provide critical benefits to both ecosystems and communities. They serve as habitats for diverse fish species and other wildlife, shield coastal communities from storm surges, prevent coastal erosion, and act as significant carbon sinks. (By Celso H. Jucutan)
