The Sericulture Research and Development Institute (SRDI) recently welcomed 150 Red Cross Youth volunteers and their advisers as part of the Philippine Red Cross’ “Earth Dash 3: Roots and Resilience, Racing for a Greener Tomorrow” initiative on September 28, 2024. This event aims to raise environmental awareness and inspire the youth to take action to preserve the planet.

During their visit, the participants had the opportunity to attend a lecture on Environmental Awareness, with a special focus on silkworm conservation. The lecture, delivered by Ms. Flordeliza L. Gaudia, SRDI’s Information Officer, underscored the pivotal role of the youth in environmental preservation. It emphasized the importance of silkworm conservation in sustaining the silk industry and protecting biodiversity, showing the critical role the youths play in this crucial task.

After the lecture, the group toured the Post-Cocoon Research and Development (PRD) facilities, delving into the intricate processes of silk production, from reeling to weaving. This unique learning experience allowed them to gain a deeper appreciation for the conservation efforts tied to silk production.

The “Earth Dash 3” event highlights the importance of building environmental resilience through education and community action. Engaging the youth in these activities ensures that the future generation will continue to care for the environment and create sustainable practices. Before the SRDI lecture, various activities such as tree planting and pledge of commitment were also undertaken. Through experiences like this, DMMMSU-SRDI not only promotes environmental awareness but also empowers the next generation to take the lead in preserving resources. (By Junalyn C. Dasugo)
