DMMMSU-Open University System (DOUS) demonstrated commitment to supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of parolees and probationers by hosting “Training 6 on Governance, Safety, and Security Clusters” for 41 parolees and probationers at the DOUS Multi-purpose Hall on September 27, 2024.

Led by Prof. Claudia Denise P. Barbadillo, Head of Extension, in collaboration with Atty. Jonald F. Carrera, Legal Officer and Administrative Officer, and Dr. Luzviminda F. Salamanca, Head of Instruction, the training aimed to enhance disaster preparedness skills, promote awareness of human rights, and provide free legal counseling services tailored to the participant’s specific needs. The event’s success was made possible with the help of dedicated DOUS staff members, including Ms. Remedios Custodio (Finance), Ms. Jo Ann Ducusin (Human Resources), Ms. Fena Austria (Library), and Mr. Reuel Adrian Almadrigo (Management Information Systems).

A key highlight of the event was the disaster preparedness session titled “B.A.G.S.I.K.: Bagyo, Apoy, Gingined, Sakit, Intayo Kanayunen nga Lappeden,” facilitated by Ms. April Kristine C. Dilan, a specialist from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). This session focused on equipping participants with the skills and knowledge to handle natural and man-made disasters such as typhoons, fires, earthquakes, and health crises.

Atty. Manuel Rey Belisario Littaua II, a private practitioner and member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), delivered a comprehensive lecture concerning safety, legal protection, and the specific issues faced by parolees and probationers, ensuring they understood their rights and responsibilities as they reintegrate into society.

Additionally, Atty. Jonald F. Carrera, Atty. Daniela Sandra M. Agoot, and Atty. Littaua II, provided free legal counseling services, addressing various concerns brought forward by the participants.

This initiative was conducted by DOUS in partnership with CDRRMO of San Fernando City, La Union, and IBP. (by Claudia Denise Barbadillo)
