To fortify the University’s support of its constituents ‘with disabilities,’ the SLUC Human Resource Management Office conducted Disability Awareness Program at Eriguel Hall, today, September 25. The training was attended by the SLUC Faculty Association, Non-Teaching Association, GAD Facilitators, Campus Student Body Organization, and the Administrative Council.
Dr. Raquel D. Quaimbao, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, warmly welcomed the participants on behalf of Dr. Joanne C. Rivera, SLUC Chancellor.
Ms. Perla A. Sotelo, University Focal Person for Senior Citizens and Disability Affairs, served as the resource person. She initially presented a refresher on the historical background of disability awareness and the existing legal bases before delving into misconceptions and stereotypes concerning the PWDs.
Ms. Sotelo shared her own experiences as she herself is a PWD. She gave recounts of the University’s efforts in Gender and Development through the initiatives of her former office.
She capped her presentation by addressing the questions raised by the participants especially regarding the focal persons and concrete plans of the campus and of the university in catering to the needs of its PWD constituents.
When translated into actions, this training aims to subsiding the stereotypical mindset of the society; hence, providing enormous opportunities and privileges for everyone to get involved in creating a positive, inclusive society for all. (By Gloeduard G. Milanes)
