The Planning and Development Office of the University, led by Vice President for Planning and Development Dr. Priscilo P. Fontanilla, Jr., actively participated in the recent FuturesPhil 2024 Conference, held at the Manila Prince Hotel from August 22-24.

Together with VP Fontanilla, Jr., the delegation included Mr. Charlie C. De Vera, Director of Institutional Planning and Futures Thinking; Prof. Mary Jane B. Dulay, Director of Infrastructure Planning and Head of Institutional Planning and Futures Thinking of Mid La Union Campus (MLUC); Ms. Shiela E. Calica, University Coordinator for Futures Thinking of North La Union Campus (NLUC); and Campus Heads Prof. Roy N. Laquidan (NLUC) and Prof. Marissa R. Fangon (South La Union Campus).

This three-day conference with the theme “FuturesPhil 2024: Towards Sustainable Development, Innovation, and Futures Thinking” brought together a diverse group of scholars, administrators, academicians, and researchers to explore the crucial role of futures thinking in shaping the Philippines’ future. The conference explored into the intersection of futures thinking with various fields and sectors, acknowledging the challenges of a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world. Key themes explored included:

  • The Futures of Engineering and Innovations: Discussions focused on how to leverage technological advancements and innovation to address pressing challenges and drive economic growth.
  • The Futures of Education in the Philippines: Participants explored how to equip Filipino students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
  • The Futures of Development Security: The conference addressed the multifaceted challenges of development security, including environmental sustainability, social equity, and national resilience.
  • The Futures of Work and Technology: Experts examined the evolving nature of work and the impact of technological advancements on the future of employment.

Senator Pia Cayetano, a vocal advocate for education reform, delivered a powerful speech through her Assistant, highlighting the importance of educational initiatives in advancing futures thinking and foresight in the Philippines. Her commitment to fostering a future-ready workforce resonated deeply with attendees. While Senator Win Gatchalian, another champion of education reform, shared his insightful perspectives on the future of education in the Philippines. His address emphasized the need for a forward-thinking approach to education, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of the 21st century.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation

Beyond the plenary sessions, the conference fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, encouraging participants to engage in thought-provoking discussions about the potential of futures thinking to bridge the gap between vision and action. Keynote speeches and inspirational messages from distinguished guests of honor further enriched the discussions, offering valuable insights and perspectives on the future. The recently concluded FuturesPhil 2024 served as a powerful platform for collaboration and innovation, highlighting the importance of futures thinking in shaping a brighter future for the Philippines.
