The National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) recently concluded its training titled “Introduction to Meliponiculture: Exploring Other Opportunities in Beekeeping,” held at the NARTDI Conference Hall, NARTDI Building, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union, from July 24 to July 26, 2024.
Researchers and extension professionals from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), representatives from NARTDI Beekeeping Satellite Centers, participants from President Ramon Magsaysay State University, and private beekeepers attended the training.
The three-day event focused on two distinct features: meliponiculture, the practice of keeping stingless bees; and product development. Participants were introduced to the biology, behavior, and management of stingless bees, as well as the benefits of their products such as honey and propolis, and learned how to develop new products from stingless bee honey and propolis.
The training sessions include lectures and hands-on activities. Mr. Lee Gaitana, a beekeeping expert, shared his experiences and insights on hive management and product processing for stingless bees. A pivotal component of the training was a practical demonstration showcasing the creation of liniment, tincture, and ointment from propolis.
Dr. Joseph A. Panas, Director of NARTDI, emphasized the importance of diversifying beekeeping practices to enhance the sustainability and productivity of the beekeeping industry. “Stingless bees offer unique opportunities for beekeepers. Their products are highly valued, and their role in pollination is crucial for maintaining biodiversity. This training equips our participants with the knowledge and skills to explore and integrate meliponiculture into their beekeeping ventures,” he stated. (By Arvin C. Tuyan)
