The Ilocos Norte Salt Industry Provincial Council, recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, organized a significant benchmarking activity at the DMMMSU-NLUC Fisheries Research and Training Institute (FRTI) on May 30, 2024. This activity holds immense potential for the salt industry in Ilocos Norte, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and product quality.

The delegation comprised 20 participants, including LGU focal persons and salt makers from the five (5) salt-producing municipalities in Ilocos Norte. Ms. Irish Mystica Sanguir, the Salt Industry Focal Person, led the group. They were accompanied by Mr. Wilson del Rosario, in charge of Bacnotan’s Negosyo Center.

They visited the salt processing area of DMMMSU-NLUC, FRTI, observed the salt processing methods firsthand, and gained insights into the technologies and equipment utilized in modern salt production.

Ms. Maria Corazon Salvador-Racela, Officer-in-Charge of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Division of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Ilocos Norte, delivered a compelling speech at the forum. The insights gained from this benchmarking activity are expected to significantly advance the salt industry in Ilocos Norte. By applying the learnings, local producers can potentially enhance their efficiency and product quality, thereby boosting competitiveness and fostering economic growth in the region’s salt sector.

Quality Assurance Office of DMMMSU-NLUC together with Mr. Alin Sherick Sabiano, Educational Research Assistant II and Mr. Richard Rivera from DMMMSU-FRTI supervised the group during the visit.
