The three campus choirs of DMMMSU harmonized together with the Philippine Madrigal Singers during their concert at La Union Convention Center, San Fernando City, on February 9, 2024. This was the world-renowned singers’ Banaag concert tour in La Union.
The tour is part of their nationwide campaign of bringing choral music to different parts of the Philippines as part of the vision of their founder, National Artist for Music Andrea Veneracion, of a singing Philippines.
The three campus choirs, namely, the Northern Chorus of NLUC, the MLUC Chorale, and the DMMMSU Chorale of SLUC, joined the Philippine Madrigals in singing two songs — Sing From the Heart, and Sing! Philippines, Sing!
Apart from the performance, the groups exclusively received training and workshops from the famous choral group together with other choirs from Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union, and Benguet. This inspired the three conductors of the three campus choirs to envision collaborative and supportive choral activities in the future. The choir conductors are Renan Flores (SLUC), Danreve Leo Gamboa (NLUC), and Justin Paul Vallinan (MLUC).
Fherlyn Mae Alejo, an officer and Soprano member of DMMMSU Chorale said, “Joining the Philippine Madrigal Singers in one stage is a life-changing and memorable experience since not all are given an opportunity to get up close and sing with the Madz!”
The event was organized by the Rotary Club and the Provincial Government of La Union with the help of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Andrea O. Veneracion Sing Philippines Foundation.
The Philippine Madrigal Singers is the country’s pride by becoming the first choir to be awarded by UNESCO as Ambassadors of Peace and Goodwill as well as the first choir in the world to win twice in the European Grand Prix for Choral Music, an event considered to be the Olympics for world choral music. The group is currently conducted by Mark Anthony C. Carpio. (By Renan Flores)
