Information Technology students from the College of Information Technology in the Mid La Union Campus (MLUC) bagged major awards in ICT competitions during the 5th ICT Summit at the J&V Hotel and Resort on March 12, 2023. This was hosted by the City Government of San Fernando, in coordination with the City of San Fernando Information and Communication Technology (CSF ICT) Council.

The group of 4th – year BS IT students namely Aldrin Bucasas, John Lester Mendoza, Joseph Abubo, and Jessa Santos was declared Champion in the e-Governance Awards with their application AGSIRB-E: A Barangay Services Management System for the City of San Fernando, while another team of 4th-year students — Diana Galang, Melvin Iverson Magcalas, Abraham Lozano, and Eulogio F. Ujano Jr. placed second with their A.C.E (Approach in-Case of Emergency): An Automated Emergency Response Application in La Union app.

Meanwhile, for the Startup Challenge, the team of Dennis Loren Tacubanza, Lily Ann Ugay, and Rizalyn Florague capped third place with their Travel Buddy application. They are third-year students.

Also recognized as a finalist was the Washing Well Laundry Services Mobile Application developed by Gaila Marie Rivera, Kyle Rhandall Sanchez, Melanie Jane Buena, and Vener Rosal (4th-year students).

They were accompanied by their coaches, Dr. Alvin R. Malicdem, Prof. Marylen D. Rodriguez, and Ms. Marydel C. Estira. For their prizes, the group that won the First Prize brought home P15, 000 and a 43-inch smart TV. The 2nd received P10, 000 and the 3rd received P5, 000.

The summit had for its aims to educate young talents on the latest developments in ICT, and to empower them to contribute to sustainable growth and development in the economy and local governance in the City and the Province of La Union. It featured a Keynote Speech by USED Jocelle Batapa – Sigue of the Department of Communications Technolology, and three plenary lectures on topics namely ICT Inclusive Growth : Digital Transformation Initiatives in the Region, Improving Education and Skills for the Digital Age Industry and Technology Innovation.
