BS in Nursing students were welcomed into the nursing profession through their pinning, capping and candle lighting ceremonies while Diploma in Midwifery students were conferred of their calling as midwives at the Jose D. Aspiras Hall on Monday, September 5, 2022.
The participants who were donned in white uniforms and white face masks bearing DMMMSU logo, were composed of 146 BS Nursing students who belong to Batch 2023, and 189 who belong to Batch 2024. Meanwhile, 84 came from Diploma in Midwifery.
These future nurses are now in their third and fourth years as the 15th and 16th capping and pinning ceremonies which are normally held during their sophomore years were delayed due to the restrictions of movements and travels during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ceremonies signify that these future health professionals have been equipped and empowered to do clinical duties which is the highlight of their in service training– actual clinical experience.
Prior to the ceremonies was a thanksgiving mass which was offered by Rev. Fr. Jhun Templa. The ceremonies started with the lighting of vigil candle which was made more creative with the presence of a Mother Madonna in the person of Prof. Gina L. Domondon, and of a Nightingale played by Prof. Jewell F. Llavore. This was followed by the imposition of caps, pinning of badges, distribution of nurses’ lamps, and especially designed Madonna-and-child figurines. Other parts of the program include Midwife’s Pledge and Nightingale’s Pledge. Still another equally significant part of the program was students’ paying tribute to their parents.
Also present to grace the occasion were Dr. Elsie M. Pacho, VP of Academic Affairs, who represented the University President, and Dr. Joanne C. Rivera, SLUC Chancellor.
Both parents and students who attended the ceremonies expressed their appreciation of Dean Gabriel O. Bacungan, and Program Chairs, Prof. Rolando P Roncal, Jr. and Prof. Marites B. Dagang, all the clinical coordinators, and faculty members of the College of Community Health and Allied Medical Sciences for their incessant desire to make the memorable event a reality. (Ayu)
