As part of DMMMSU’s promotion of research culture, the South La Union Campus, through the College of Arts and Sciences led by its College Dean, Dr. Raquel D. Quiambao, spearheaded a training-workshop titled “Selecting and Designing Instruments: Item Reliability and Validity” last April 20-21, 2022 via Zoom.
Prof. Paolo G. Hilado, Director of the Research and Planning in Colegio San Agustin, Bacolod and specialist in artificial intelligence, research management, and data science served as the learning service provider.
Forty-five (45) participants from the different colleges and units of DMMMSU-SLUC had the opportunity to recalibrate and redesign their knowledge and skills in selecting and designing instruments authenticating the reliability and validity of research instruments, especially in the use of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) and R Studio—which are leading software used by universities, government agencies, and other research institutions.
The two-day training was formally opened by Dr. Manilyn R. Cacanindin, the OIC Program Chair of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language, who emphasized that research is the foundation for both instruction and extension operations.
The lectures, discussions, and activities revolved around the review and recalibration of the participants’ knowledge and skills in Validity and Reliability Testing, Rasch Model for Construct Validity Test-retest reliability Testing using Pearson r, Internal Consistency Reliability Testing using Cronbach’s Alpha, Rasch Model for Construct Validity, the Lawshe Content Validity Ratio, and Pearson r Internal Consistency Reliability Testing using Cronbach’s Alpha and Kuder Richardson 20.
With the assistance of Dr. Estrada as the host of the training, the faculty participants diligently engaged in the workshop with the use of Microsoft Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics, and the RStudio through Zoom Breakout Rooms which ended with the presentation of the outputs of the different colleges through rationalization and discussion.
Along with Dean Quiambao are her co-organizers Dr. Tjaart Jan Estrada, Program Chair BS Math, MA Mathematics Education, and PhD Mathematics Education; and Dr. Marcelina H. Ayson, Program Chair for MA in Guidance and Counselling. (Manilyn R. Cacanindin)
