Prof. Joel C. Estacio, Chair for DMMMSU Research Ethics Committee, was awarded as Best Performing Individual in Health Research in Region 1 by the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC). The virtual awarding ceremony coincided with the consortium’s management committee meeting held on December 22, 2021.


The ceremony was attended in by heads and representatives of the member institutions and agencies in the Region.
In a letter forwarded by RlHRDC, Prof. Joel was acknowledged for his contributions in conducting researches on health which ‘remarkably help in improving the quality of life of the Ilocanos.’
Selection criteria include research guidance which covers research mentorship/advising/coaching, and services as training learning research provider; and research track record which covers research publication and presentation, and awards. For a candidate to qualify for nomination, they must have served as a research mentor for three years.
Prof. Estacio has been serving as adviser in various graduate and undergraduate researches in several other institutions besides DMMMSU, and as a mentor for several faculty members conducting researches and those who present papers in national and international fora, as well as those who submit papers for publication.
As a researcher himself, he has published six research papers in SCOPUS/Web of Science indexed journals. What’s more, he has served as a learning service provider in National Conference (organized by Philippine Nursing Research Society, Inc. and Philippine Nurses Association) and as a speaker on research in various institutions like Dr. Jose Fabella School of Midwifery and Our Lady of Fatima University. Prof. Estacio is also a recipient of an International Award for Best Paper Presentation given by International Association of Bioethics. Currently, he is in his final stage in his dissertation writing for PhD in Nursing.
Besides his active engagements in research, Prof. Estacio, a faculty member of the College of Community Health and Allied Medical Sciences, also serves as a senior DMMMSU Internal Quality Assurance Auditor, and SLUC Quality Management Auditor.
R1HRDC is a pool of institutions and health researchers engaged in facilitating health research activities to help improve individual and community health in Region 1. It serves as a partner of PCHRD in establishing mechanisms that strengthen health research capabilities, and in encouraging resource sharing between and among institutions in Region 1. Among the 31 member institutions of R1HRDC are academic institutions and health care facilities, and DOH, DOST, CHED, Commisssion on Population and Commission on Human Rights. (Ayu)
