The debate team from Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (BAPoS) of the Mid La Union Campus (MLUC) won the championship round of the (Y4U) Asian Parliamentary Debate Cup – College Category against that of Bulacan State University’s (BulSU) on December 11.

The team was composed of Joni Kay M. Mendoza (BAPoS III), Prime Minister; Joselle Jea P. Armas (BAPoS III), Deputy Prime Minister; and John Sever G. Buenavista (BAPoS IV), Whip.  Prof. Fritz Krieg Allawey served as their coach.

The debate addressed the motion that the house shall allow face to face learning modality in all public and private schools from school year 2022 to 2023 where DMMMSU-MLUC representatives took the government side.

In an interview with Joni Kay Mendoza, she expressed her gratitude for the people who helped and guided them along the way.

“I’d like to acknowledge Sir Fritz who served as our coach, for his guidance and tips, and the support that he has given us throughout this entire process as he helped us to revive the debate mentality,” Mendoza said.

“Debate is a team event and I’m glad to be with such great people like Jea and Kuya Sever who are not only very gifted and skilled speakers, but also such remarkable people who are supportive and very fun to work with. Ang ganda nung feeling na kahit ang hirap nung situation, I can find comfort and assurance sa kanila,” she added.

She also expressed her gratitude to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Provincial Student Body Organization (SBO) Governor, Vanessa Jane C. Quilates, whom she described as the fourth member of the team and was the person who brought the team together.

UNESCO, through the debate, aims at seeing differing viewpoints on the different social issues and encouraging the youth to potentially come up with solutions and better options that would foster the society’s greater good. This debate provided a forum for the youth’s voices to be heard, as well as for them to express their concerns. (Aki Ross G. Balangue | MLUC Voice)
