DMMMSU Sports Unit headed by the University Director for Sports Development, Dr. Paulo Jan Samson, held a 3-day training on badminton for 50 University Personnel. As part of the health and wellness program of the University, the training was held at the Ortega Memorial Center at the North La Union Campus, Bacnotan, La Union on June 30 to July 2, 2021.
Activities during the first day include lectures on equipment and facilities, rhythmic dynamics in badminton, enhancement training on scooping and catching shuttle, serving and receiving, doing stroke and footwork, and the combination of both using front and back approaches, as well as applying these in their net play and court settings.
During the second day, the participants enjoyed another set of rhythmic dynamics with the inclusion of more fundamentals, did more strengthening exercises, and more intense applications of stroke and footwork in court settings. They were also taught how to play badminton doubles. Before they dismissed on the second day, participants were paired according to their category.
To further improve the participants’ confidence in playing badminton and develop their love for the game, they were immersed in a fan-packed tournament. It was not just any tournament. The trainees enjoyed a national tournament feels. Winners were announced, each recognized and well applauded.
The following emerged as winners:
• Men’s Doubles: Hipolito Buccat and Jerome Malasaga
• Women’s Beginner Category: Presiosa Astro and Juliet Espero
• Women’s Advanced Category: Excel Cabrera and Shaine Arellano
Four (4) lecturers namely Manny Joseph Y. Sinen, Ralph Christian Carungay, Manuel Y. Sinen, Jr., and Omar M. Bambalan; as well as six (6) trainers namely Danilo S. Villanueva, Jr., Francis M. Alabag, Kyx Sydney M. Sinen, Justine B. Macayayong, Venussa P. Melodia, and Juanito V. Acosta were part of the training team. The participants unanimously applauded them for their enthusiasm since Day 0. Before the training days, the team of Mr. Sinen had to prepare the four badminton courts in the Ortega Memorial Center—a 5-day task which they finished for only 2 days.
The badminton training team wishes to extend their appreciation to President Jaime I. Manuel, Jr. who has been very supportive of sports endeavors of the University and for promoting health and wellness among the University Personnel through sports. They also wish to extend their thanks to all those who selflessly sacrificed to help make the training a huge success.
