The first online beekeeping training was successfully conducted by NARTDI on November 10, 19, and 20, 2020 via Google Meet. Fifteen participants composed of fourteen students, agriculturists, educators, and other interested private individuals and professionals, and one from Indonesia, learned the fundamentals of keeping honeybees from the following lectures:
- Introduction: History, Honeybee Biology, and GAD Concerns of the Beekeeping Industry by Ms. Rolyne Mae C. Pajarillo;
- Beekeeping Tools, Equipment, and Hive Construction by Engr. Rowel M. Munar;
- Hive Management by Mr. George T. Bondot;
- Honeybee Pest, Predators and Diseases Management by Dr. Adora A. Garcia;
- Queen Rearing by Mr. Arvin C. Tuyan;
- Bee Pasture Development and Pollination by Mr. Merlito D. Tangalin;
- Honeybee Products and By-Products by Prof. Carolyn A. Akilith;
- Economics of Beekeeping by Mr. David T. de Castro; and
- Climate Change: Its Impact to Insect Pollinators and Agriculture by Mr. Rizalde A. Claro.
Ms. Mishima P. Soliba, and Mr. Jessie B. Vallecera served as moderator and facilitator, respectively. Despite the global health crisis and natural environmental disturbances such as typhoons, NARTDI continuously attends to the needs of industry clients by adapting new normal approaches. The Institute capitalizes on the use of the internet and digital devices to promote apiculture projects and encourage the public to venture in beekeeping.
This training is one of the prime extension activities of NARTDI anchored in the first mandate of Republic Act 9151, “to educate and train beekeepers and apiculturists.” RMPajarillo
